Philosophy

History is always in the making our lives and it’s changing the face of the world as we know it. It’s important to know about our past and make sure we don’t repeat it. With Cultural relevant pedagogy I believe it will give my students the cushion to feel comfortable being themselves without feeling like an outcast. Cultural relevant pedagogy “guides students in developing a critical awareness that they can apply to analyze or impede current and historical social inequities.” (Morrison, Robbins, Rose, 2008).

I will create a safe space for all the kids who feel left out or needing a place to belong. History should be taught in a universal way for students to feel like people that are culturally like them contribute to something positive in society and one day they could apply that to the real world. I want students to learn not only about the negative parts of history but also the positive contributions of history.

My teaching style follows along Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs and social constructivism. Through humanism basic needs should be met first, as humans we feel the need that sense of belonging and strive for self-actualization.  Social constructivism takes into account that language and culture influence how children makes sense of their world and how it’s use to co-constructed with other social situations,no student will feel left behind or irrelevant because of race, gender, and cultural background. Every student will have a voice to express who they are, and I will guarantee them that safe space for them to do so.
